What is a Pandemic?

A Pandemic is an epidemic of infectious disease that spreads through human populations across a large region; for instance a continent, or even worldwide.

When the scriptures talk about pestilence, is this what they’re talking about?(link coming)

A Pestilence is any virulent and highly infectious disease that can cause an epidemic or even a pandemic. The word can also be used about parasites causing large scale sickness and death, such as the Guinea worm.

Originally the word referred to the bubonic plague, which is called pestis in Latin.

What are the experts saying?

"Given the high level of global traffic, the pandemic virus may spread rapidly, leaving little or no time to prepare." -World Health Organization

Should my family be vaccinated?

Taking the swine flu vaccine is a controversial issue. Getting the swine flu vaccination is a decision that needs to be made by each family.

How would your life change during a pandemic?

My husband works for the city. He brought home a booklet titled,

"Individual and Family Handbook - BE PREPARED FOR A FLU PANDEMIC” that had just been distributed to all the city employees.

Within the first few pages it gave a list of “Services that could be disrupted."

  • Public Transportation
  • Communications
  • Schools
  • Businesses such as banks, stores and restaurants
  • Utilities
  • Medical Care
  • Police and Fire Departments

What do you need to do to prepare NOW?

Swine Flu Preparation - Pandemic Book

You might be thinking “Wow! I’m not ready for something like this!”

If you’ll imagine yourself in this situation before it happens, you’ll know how to prepare for it.(link coming)

“When it is time to act, the time for preparation is over.”

After months of study and research, I put together a 65 page book of information on the Pandemic. It goes over how to prepare and ideas that have worked for me plus a lot of other information!

Melonie now has her presentation on DVD click on the link to learn more.

Where do you start?

Start with having a food supply for several months. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints has been encouraging everyone to get a 3-month supply of food. That’s inspired advice! This is food that is part of your normal, daily diet. This 3-month supply is in addition to your long-term survival food, such as wheat, white rice, and beans.

I put together a 3-month plan of some of my favorite food storage recipes. It is a 6-step plan to help you get the job done. I've even given you the grocery list!

--I’ve tasted Melonie's cooking, she’s knows how to make food storage taste great.--Jennifer

Well, how much food storage can you use without a supply of water to go with it? NOT MUCH! You can actually live without food for quite a while, but only for 3 days without water. Better get some water too.

What else might you need?

Now that you have food and water, what else might you need during a swine flu epidemic? What if you’re quarantined in your home for several months? (quick-link for in-depth explanation about that link coming)

What about medical supplies?

"Even now, there is little to no excess capacity to absorb more patients, but when the pandemic flu arrives there will be a tidal wave of patients arriving in clinics and ERs nationwide. If it happens tomorrow, the system will collapse."
-Dr. James A. Wilde of the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Medical College of Georgia

Swine Flu - Don't go to hospital

What if you get the swine flu and can’t get into the doctor’s office or hospital, what kind medical supplies would you need? You probably won’t even want to go there and be with all those other sick people!

The hospitals don't even want contagious, sick people to come in. This was taken from a sign on the door of my local hospital.

What can you do at home?

I decided to draw on my “hands-on” experience to put together some supplies.

As the mother of eight children, I've helped a lot of sick children. Only two of my children have ever been on an antibiotic. That was several years ago when two of my boys had an earache that I couldn’t get rid of.

--I'd say that is a pretty good track record.--Jennifer

Here’s a good list of things to have on hand that have been working for my family for years!
