Why Buy Seed Garlic?

Holding Large Garlic Bulb There have been some experiments in producing garlic seed, but almost all garlic is grown from individual cloves. You can start growing garlic by planting the biggest, healthiest looking cloves from an ordinary bulb of garlic.

So why, then, would you want to buy garlic seed? You can get cheap garlic from the grocery store and start growing garlic without spending very much money?

The answer is quality. You can increase your chance of success by using the best cloves from the best garlic bulbs. We have not found any commercially grown garlic that matches the quality of the garlic you see in these pictures.

Some years ago, a friend gave us a few cloves of the most magnificent garlic we’ve ever seen. We didn’t eat any of the garlic that first year and saved it all for seed. The next year, we again replanted the garlic cloves. Each planted clove yields a bulb of garlic the next year.

Some people buy elephant garlic because of its size, but it isn't real garlic. Elephant garlic is probably more closely related to the leek than to ordinary garlic. What we've grown IS NOT elephant garlic. The cloves are huge, and it's real garlic. It has a strong, rich, flavor.

You’ll notice that this garlic doesn’t get smaller as it gets closer to the center of the bulb. These bulbs only have one row of cloves. All of the cloves are big.

When you get your garlic, don't eat it. Save it and plant it this fall. Next year you'll have 4-5 times the amount of garlic. Save some for replanting and eat the rest. Garlic stores well. I just finished using up some garlic that we stored last fall.

Garlic adds flavor to your food and it's good for you too. There are many health benefits of garlic.
